If you’re shopping for a pre-owned Lexus car here at Keyes Lexus, you’re probably looking for something that has a lower amount of mileage. After all, the less a car has been driven, the more miles you’ll be able to put on it before you need to replace it with a new one, right?

When you visit Keyes Lexus, we’ll tell you that mileage isn’t the only thing to look out for when you’re shopping for a pre-owned luxury vehicle. Here’s what you need to know about mileage on pre-owned cars.

The “Ideal” Mileage

If you’re shopping for a pre-owned car, the ideal mileage is generally considered to be 12,000 miles for every year it’s been on the road. In other words, if a pre-owned Lexus car is five years old, it should have around 60,000 miles on the odometer.

These pre-owned cars may have been driven a decent amount, but they also had previous drivers that kept them in top shape. Plus, 12,000 miles per year isn’t excessive, and it’s unlikely that a pre-owned car driven that often has been worn down prematurely or had its lifespan shortened.

Can a Pre-Owned Car Have Too Few Miles?

If you see a five-year-old car with fewer than 60,000 miles on it, that’s an instant buy, right? Not necessarily. It’s possible for a pre-owned vehicle could actually have too few miles on it.

If you find a car that has far fewer miles on the odometer than expected, it wasn’t driven that often. The engine and other components didn’t always get to operate at their full potential, and you don’t know whether it’s in fine condition or if some parts need to be replaced. An inspection from a mechanic couldn’t hurt here.
